Hand Tremor Recording
Objective: Measurement of hand tremor frequency and amplitude in vervet monkeys before and after MPTP treatment to correlate with neuronal oscillatory activity in the globus pallidus
Protocol Steps
Baseline recording in healthy monkeys
Record hand tremor and simultaneous neuronal activity from globus pallidus neurons in healthy vervet monkeys before any treatment
Note: Baseline measurements establish normal oscillation patterns
View evidence from paper
“we recorded hand tremor and simultaneous activity of several neurons in the external and internal segments of the globus pallidus (GPe and GPi) in two vervet monkeys, before and after systemic treatment”
MPTP treatment administration
Administer systemic MPTP treatment to induce parkinsonism with tremor
Note: Treatment results in development of tremor at 5 and 11 Hz frequencies

“after systemic treatment with 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) and development of parkinsonism with tremor of 5 and 11 Hz”
Post-treatment recording
Record hand tremor and simultaneous neuronal activity from globus pallidus neurons after MPTP treatment
Note: Measurements taken after parkinsonism development with tremor
View evidence from paper
“recorded hand tremor and simultaneous activity of several neurons in the external and internal segments of the globus pallidus (GPe and GPi) in two vervet monkeys, before and after systemic treatment”
Tremor and neuronal oscillation correlation analysis
Analyze tremor periods and identify simultaneous neuronal oscillations in recorded cells
Note: 10% of oscillatory cells showed significant tendency for tremor and neuronal oscillations to appear simultaneously
View evidence from paper
“For 10% of the oscillatory cells that were recorded during tremor periods, there was a significant tendency for the tremor and neuronal oscillations to appear simultaneously”
Cross-correlation analysis
Perform cross-correlation analysis to examine correlated activity between pallidal neuron pairs
Note: Analysis reveals changes in synchronization patterns between healthy and MPTP-treated states
View evidence from paper
“Cross-correlation analysis revealed a very low level of correlated activity between pallidal neurons in the normal state; 95.6% (477/499) of the pairs were not correlated”
