Delayed Response Task
Objective: Evaluate the effects of basal forebrain cholinergic system lesions on delayed response performance and working memory abilities in primates
Protocol Steps
Surgical lesion creation
Administer ibotenic acid injections into basal forebrain regions including medial septum, nucleus of the diagonal band of Broca, and nucleus basalis of Meynert
Note: Lesions created in cynomolgus monkeys to disrupt basal forebrain cholinergic system

Delayed response task administration
Administer delayed response cognitive task to assess working memory and delayed response performance
Note: Task used to evaluate effects of BFCS lesions on cognitive processes

“using a large series of cognitive tasks that examined different mnemonic and attentional abilities”
Scopolamine sensitivity assessment
Administer scopolamine injections during delayed nonmatching-to-sample task to assess central cholinergic system compromise
Note: Increased sensitivity to scopolamine indicates compromised cholinergic system
