Mouse breeding and genotyping
Heterozygous C57BL6 mice were paired with heterozygous SV129 mice to produce F1 generation hybrid offspring with deficient BK channel function. Mice were generated and genotyped at the Pharmaceutical Institute, University of Tübingen, Germany.
Note: Exclusively F1 generation mice were tested to avoid effects of inbreeding. Each mouse received an individual ear-tag when collecting DNA sample for genotyping.

Mouse transportation and acclimation
Mice were shipped to Canada at the age of 1.5-3 months and subsequently allowed to acclimate for 2 weeks before behavioral testing started.

Housing conditions during testing period
Mice were group housed with mixed genetic background within groups, maintained on a 12 hour light-dark cycle with ad libitum food and water access.
Note: Testing only occurred during the light cycle from 7am to 7pm. If animals were tested repeatedly over several days, the time of testing for each animal was kept constant.

Hearing test performance
The hearing test was performed on a separate set of animals. Specific details of the hearing test procedure are referenced in respective method sections but not detailed in this excerpt.
Note: Different randomly selected subsets of the 56 total animals were used for the hearing test and other single tests.
